Did you know that every month Home Depot hosts a kids building workshop? And it’s free! It’s a great way to teach kids how to hammer (and occasionally use a screwdriver), follow instructions, paint, and to take pride in something they’ve built. Read on to see what the Kids Home Depot Workshop is like, and get ready to sign up to attend!
Kids Home Depot Workshop – Dates & Projects
Kids Home Depot Workshops are generally the morning of the first Saturday of the month. You can drop in anytime from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm or until supplies run out. To find out what stores are participating around you and to see the upcoming project, go to https://www.homedepot.com/workshops.
You can sign up online, but since you still have to fill out a paper waiver when you arrive, we just show up. We like to get there at 9:00 am, since the workshops at our Home Depot are popular and can get pretty cozy by 10:00 am. The projects generally take us about 30 minutes.
Kids Home Depot Workshop – Supplies
When you check in at the workshop, you’ll receive the packaged project, a plate, and a paintbrush. If it’s your first time, be sure to ask for a kids apron (they’re free!). They look adorable on kids, and they help protect against paint stains later in the project.
At our store, the workshop area looks like this. They cover stacks of plywood with a canvas and scatter paints and hammers on them. We’ve been to the kids workshop at other Home Depots where we’ve worked in the conference room as well as on lower stacks of plywood while sitting on buckets. So the setup will really just depend on your store.
After opening the building kit, you’ll see an instruction sheet. The pictures are super-helpful and great for kids to follow! I like to corral all of the hardware on the plate.
Kids Home Depot Workshop – Building & Painting
It’s so neat to watch kids improve their building skills! They have fun while developing skills they’ll use their whole lives.

My kids’ favorite part is painting. They often mix colors together, and they spend more time painting than building.
I love seeing how proud they are of their creations. Once you’ve finished the project, don’t forget to stop back by the registration desk to get a pin specific to the project. Our kids have quite the pin collection on the fronts of their aprons!
Kids Home Depot Workshop – Finishing Touches
Most of the projects come with stickers. So after the paint is dry, stickers are applied. Aren’t these cute?
At the Kids Home Depot Workshops, we’ve created toolboxes, planters, trucks, helicopters, games, Christmas ornaments, and seasonal items. Some projects are similar from one year to another, but none are exact repeats. How wonderful that Home Depot is instilling hands-on skills in the next generation!
