Painted Kitchen Cabinet Update – Small Remodel, Big Change!

I hope you had a great July 4th and are in the midst of a fabulous summer!  You loyal readers may remember that I posted about our in-progress kitchen update in April.  I had such a big response to that post that I decided to share the before and after photos.  Laguna Lane is not a home improvement, remodel, or decorating blog.  But I’m making an exception to that rule, since so many asked to see our finished kitchen.  So here is our painted kitchen cabinet update.  I love it all over again every day!

Before the Painted Kitchen Cabinet Update

Here is our kitchen before we made any updates.  Our home was built in 1988.  We purchased it in 2011, and we lived in this oak-y kitchen ever since.  I added some fabric behind the open shelves in an attempt to break up all of the yellow-stained wood.  But it didn’t make much of a dent, as you can see.

Here’s a closer look at the cabinets.  Our three main goals in this remodel:

  • Paint the cabinets!!
  • Replace the flooring with tile
  • Install recessed lighting in place of the fluorescent light box

After the Painted Kitchen Cabinet Update

Isn’t this an amazing transformation??  We didn’t replace the counter top, back splash, or appliances, and yet the kitchen is totally transformed!

Kitchen Table Light – Capital Lighting 9553BB Eight-Light Foyer

A decorator helped us make some key decisions.  She recommended going big over our breakfast table, since we weren’t putting any pendants over the island.  It wasn’t a comfortable decision for me, but I love it.

Painted Kitchen Cabinet Update – More Improvements

Here’s a shot of our kitchen right now on a very clean day.

As you can see, we replaced our oven and microwave (goodbye, 1988 oven!) with a single unit.  It might be the best Facebook bargain yet also the craziest Facebook purchase I’ve ever made.  $300 for this 7-year-old appliance!  My handy husband created a new drawer underneath with the extra space, which he’ll start painting soon.

He also installed dimmable LED lights above and below the cabinets, which adds to the bright feel of the kitchen.

What would you most like to change about your kitchen?  Or what’s your favorite feature in your kitchen?
