Looking for a special toy or gift for the little “mama” in your life? If you know a little girl who likes to care for her baby dolls, including changing their diapers, look no further than these DIY baby doll diapers made of felt!
My two year old daughter is obsessed with putting diapers on her baby dolls, and she’s amazingly adept at putting the diapers on correctly. Here’s an example of a doll she diapered all by herself.
She has the “disposable” baby doll diapers from Toys R Us, which are very cute and realistic. But they rely on adhesive to stay fastened, and the adhesive doesn’t last long. Actual diapers can be fastened over and over again, but her current size 6 diapers nearly swallow up her dolls.
After looking around online and not finding any pre-made options I liked (or liked the price of), I decided to go the DIY route. I wanted size-appropriate diapers that would hold up no matter how many diaper changes my daughter does in a day. I chose to follow the pattern and tutorial on HappyTogetherByJess.com.
First, I picked up my supplies from Hobby Lobby. Just to share what I learned…the fabric section only had solid color felt by the yard. The patterned felt sheets were on the opposite side of the store, next to the pipe cleaners and fuzzy pom poms. If you don’t have a craft store nearby, Amazon sells these solid color felt sheets.
Looks at all these cute patterns!
So here are the supplies you’ll need:
- Felt sheets (you can make 1 diaper per sheet)
- Non-adhesive (sew-on) 3/4″ wide VELCRO® or hook and loop fastener
- Rotary cutter or scissors (I’m not a sewer, so I opted to get a rotary cutter to make this project easier)
I love how these fabrics coordinate! I was hoping I could use adhesive hook and loop fastener to avoid sewing, but all of it that I found said, “Do not use on fabric.” But don’t let that discourage you if you’re not a sewer! This is the first time I used my sewing machine by myself, and it was easy!
I’m not going to list all of the steps, since they’re detailed out on the HappyTogetherByJess.com blog. But I’ll give you a few photos…
After cutting out the fabric using the patter, I cut some little rectangles from the fabric scraps to be used as wipes.
Seriously, I might have the sewing bug after this project. If only all sewing required so little prep (no pinning!!)!
Look at how much better this diapered baby doll looks! Such stylish diapers! And because of the long hook and loop fastener strip on the front of the diaper, these can fit a variety of doll and stuffed animal sizes.
I’m saving these to put in my daughter’s Easter basket, and I’m pretty sure she’s going to be thrilled! How could you not be with these girly fabrics?!
What accessories do y’all’s little girls love to use with their baby dolls?
