Kitchen Window Update – Part 1

Do you ever do something when you first move into your house, thinking you’ll change it soon, only to realize that it’s been four years and you never did?  Maybe that’s just me…

So when we moved into our house, there was a nail already in the wall above our arched kitchen window.  I stuck a little metal heart that I bought in Munich there because (a) it was easier than taking the big nail out of the wall, and (b) I didn’t know where else to hang the heart.  So over four years later, there it is!  Whoops!

Eek – it’s so small for the space!  How did I let it go this long?!

I’ve decided the kitchen window needs a little revamp overall.  First, I wanted to find something new to hang above the window that’s size-appropriate.  Second, I wanted to swap out the blinds for some curtains on a tension rod, which will add softness and color to the kitchen.  I also just really want a unobstructed view from that window during the day, since I spend a good bit of time at the sink.  Anyway, curtains will be a second post once they’re completed…

I went on a mission to find something new for above the window.  After striking out at Hobby Lobby (doesn’t happen very often!), I went to Home Goods.  This beautiful platter was sitting on an easel on a top shelf and just kept calling my name.  At $25, it’s not exactly what I’d consider a bargain at Home Goods, but I just thought it was so unique.

Love the detailed silver trim!

I bought a couple of small white plates to hang on either side, but I ended up deciding they weren’t needed.

Next came figuring out the best way to hang it.  I’d seen posts from people about using the adhesive plate hangers, which are completely invisible once hung.  But many reviews and posts noted that they did not stick well in humid weather.  That’s a no-go in Houston!

I found this little plate hanger at Michael’s for about $4 in white or gold.  It’s perfect.  The springs allow it to stretch to the size of the platter and create tension to hold it in place.  And as a bonus – it hangs perfectly on the giant nail from the previous home owners (although maybe I should move it up a hair)!

I thought it would be neat to write on the platter using a dry-erase marker.  I’m always inspired by the hand-lettered chalkboards and signs people make, although I obviously need some more practice.  Dry-erase marker will be easy to change out seasonally, and I can see fall, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. phrases on it.  For now, I decided to go with a couple of verses from Psalm 23.
